“Pendant un peu plus d’un mois, vers la fin de l’année 1957, les neuf îles portugaises des Açores furent au nombre de dix. Les fantaisies des volcans sous-marins sont responsables de ces apparitions d’îles éphémères, d’une durée variable mais n’excédant généralement pas quelques mois.
À ces îles instables on a donné le nom «d’îles à éclipses».

Trois semaines après son apparition, le cratère d’Ilha Nova, affectant la forme d’un fer à cheval, fumant toujours abondamment, dépassait déjà de 200 mètres le niveau des flots. L’activité diminuant progressivement pendant la seconde quinzaine d’octobre, pour cesser complètement le 29, la mer ne fut pas longue à disperser les scories du cône d’Ilha Nova. Le 30 octobre il ne restait de celle-ci qu’un rocher à fleur d’eau, tandis que de légères fumées s’élevaient encore de la mer sur l’emplacement de l’ancien cratère.”

Birth of an island est une collection de petites stèles d’argile et tirages d'archives présentant le phénomène d’îles à éclipses ou apparition et disparition successives d’îles, nées d’éruptions volcaniques sous-marines. Ces îles éphémères, englouties avant même que leur sol de lave ne se soit consolidé, font l’objet d’une fascination collective mais surtout de batailles diplomatiques, lors desquelles on cherche à s’attribuer ces terres provisoires et capricieuses.
Ilha Nova est la première stèle d’une série de 5.

"For a little over a month, towards the end of 1957, the nine Portuguese islands of the Azores were ten in number. The whims of submarine volcanoes are responsible for these ephemeral island appearances, of variable duration but generally not exceeding a few months.
These unstable islands have been given the name "eclipse islands".

Three weeks after its appearance, the crater of Ilha Nova, shaped like a horseshoe, still smoking abundantly, was already 200 metres above the water level. As the activity gradually decreased during the second half of October, and ceased completely on the 29th, the sea was not long in dispersing the slag from the Ilha Nova cone. On the 30th of October there remained of it only a rock flush with the water, while slight smoke still rose from the sea over the site of the former crater."

Birth of an island is a collection of small clay steles and archival prints presenting the phenomenon of eclipsing islands, or the successive appearance and disappearance of islands born of underwater volcanic eruptions. These ephemeral islands, sunken before their lava floor has even consolidated, are the object of collective fascination but above all of diplomatic battles, in which people seek to claim these temporary and capricious lands.
Ilha Nova is the first of a series of five stele.
